I’m Janessa, the designer, artisan bead weaver, and metalsmith behind every piece of jewelry in this studio.
By trade, I am a research scientist.
My day is a balance of executing highly specific protocols, and explorative troubleshooting when complex experiments don't go as planned. It requires a hyper-focused mindset of constantly testing and tweaking to drive progress within the scientific community.
On the weekends, I unleash a completely different side of myself as the lead singer of a modern rock band. Shifting away from the quietness of the lab, fronting the band gives me a necessary, high-energy outlet to fully let loose a big, expressive personality.
But in the spaces between the lab and the stage, I ground myself in calm, intricate creation.
I love working with my hands, and bead weaving gives me a profound sense of fulfillment. Unlike the unpredictable trial-and-error of my work life, following a bead pattern means immersing myself in a reliable protocol. I can sit quietly and know that the piece I am creating will turn out exactly how I imagined it.
This new obsession really took off when my husband became an avid birder. He would come home excited to share his pictures and tell me about a new species he had never seen before. Witnessing his joy of discovery made it a natural progression for me to start translating those vibrant species into meticulous wearable art.
